GEO vs SEO: the short answer

SEO (search engine optimization) gets a page ranked in the list of results so people click through. GEO (generative engine optimization) gets a brand mentioned and its pages cited inside the answer an AI system writes.

You need both. AI search features retrieve from search indexes, so SEO is the entry ticket. GEO decides what happens after retrieval: whether your passage is used, whether your brand is named, and whether it is described correctly.

What stays the same

  • Crawling and indexing. Google states there are no extra technical requirements for AI Overviews or AI Mode: a page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet (Google Search Central). Copilot is grounded in Bing's index.
  • Relevance and usefulness. Content written for people, that answers the question well, still wins in both.
  • Trust. Clear authorship, accurate information and a reputation that others confirm help rankings and citations alike.
  • Site health. Clean canonicals, sensible internal links and fast, stable pages help every system that reads your site.

What actually changes with GEO

  1. From position to inclusion. There is no "position 3" in an AI answer. You are either named or cited, or you are not.
  2. From keywords to questions and entities. One prompt fans out into several related searches, and the model needs to know which company a passage is about. Clear entity information matters as much as keyword targeting.
  3. From pages to passages. The model lifts short segments. A strong answer buried under a long introduction is easy to skip.
  4. From backlinks to corroboration. Independent sources describing you the same way make it safer for a model to repeat a claim about you.
  5. From clicks to answers. Many AI answers are read without a click, so mentions, citations and answer accuracy become outcomes in their own right.
  6. From fixed rankings to samples. Answers change between runs, so GEO is measured by repeating a fixed prompt set over time, per engine.

Where GEO and SEO habits conflict

  • Long preambles. Intros written to hold attention or add length push the actual answer down. Lead with the answer; add depth after it.
  • Content that only appears after JavaScript runs. Google renders JavaScript, but several AI crawlers read the raw HTML. Key facts should be in the initial response.
  • Many near-duplicate pages. City or keyword variants that say the same thing split signals and give models conflicting versions to choose from.
  • Gated or image-only information. Pricing tables as images, PDFs behind forms and specs in tabs are hard to retrieve and quote.
  • Inconsistent facts. Different descriptions of the same product across pages and profiles lower confidence that a claim is right.

How to run GEO and SEO from one roadmap

  1. Keep SEO hygiene first. Fix crawl, index, canonical and rendering problems on the pages that matter commercially.
  2. Add an AI visibility baseline. Pick 20 to 50 buyer prompts, run them in the engines your buyers use, and record mentions, citations and errors.
  3. Rewrite priority pages answer-first. One-sentence answer, then detail, then a table or example. This tends to help featured snippets and AI answers together.
  4. Unify your entity data. Align names, descriptions and facts across the site, structured data and external profiles.
  5. Earn corroborating mentions in the publications, directories and communities your category's answers already cite.
  6. Report both views side by side. Rankings, clicks and conversions next to mention rate, citation rate and AI referrals. See how to track AI citations.

GEO vs SEO FAQ

What is the difference between GEO and SEO?

SEO earns a ranked link on a search results page; GEO (generative engine optimization) earns a mention or a citation inside an AI-generated answer. They share one foundation, a crawlable and indexable site about a clearly defined business, but differ in what is optimized, which signals matter and how success is measured.

Is GEO replacing SEO?

No. Google says its AI features rely on the same index and best practices as Search, Copilot is grounded in Bing, and ChatGPT search retrieves from the web. A site that is weak at SEO is rarely strong at GEO. GEO adds goals and measurements on top of SEO.

If I rank number one, will AI answers cite me?

Not necessarily. Ranking helps a page get retrieved, but the answer is written from passages across several sources. A page that ranks well but buries its answer, contradicts itself or describes the brand vaguely can be retrieved and still left out.

Do backlinks matter for GEO?

They still help pages get discovered and ranked, which feeds retrieval. For GEO, what also matters is whether trusted third-party sources mention and describe your brand consistently, linked or not.

Should I hire a separate GEO agency?

Only if your SEO provider cannot do entity work, answer-first content, third-party corroboration and prompt-based measurement. Running GEO and SEO from one roadmap avoids conflicting changes to the same pages.

What replaces rankings as the main GEO metric?

Citation rate and mention rate for a fixed set of prompts, reported per engine and time window, plus share of voice against named competitors. Keep tracking rankings and clicks too, because they still drive revenue and feed AI retrieval.
