What is answer engine optimization?

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring content and brand information so answer engines can take a direct answer from it and attribute that answer to you.

An answer engine is any system that responds to a question with an answer rather than a list of links: Google's featured snippets, AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot, Gemini, and voice assistants such as Siri and Alexa.

The term predates today's AI assistants. It grew out of featured snippets and voice search, when the goal was to be the single answer read aloud or shown above the results. Generative AI widened the surfaces and changed the mechanics: instead of quoting one page, engines now summarize several and cite some of them.

AEO vs GEO vs SEO

The three labels describe overlapping layers of the same job: being found, understood and chosen by search systems.

In practice, AEO and GEO are mostly the same work under two names. AEO puts more weight on question-shaped content and direct answers; GEO puts more weight on how generative models retrieve, combine and cite sources. Neither works on a site search engines cannot crawl and index. For the generative side in depth, read what is generative engine optimization; for the classic comparison, see GEO vs SEO.

How answer engines choose an answer

  1. Understand the question and, for AI features, expand it into related searches. Google calls this query fan-out.
  2. Retrieve candidate pages from a search index: Google's for its AI features, Bing's for Copilot, and a mix of a dedicated crawler and search partners for ChatGPT search.
  3. Extract the passage that answers the question most directly and completely.
  4. Prefer what is corroborated. Facts that match across several independent sources are safer to state.
  5. Attribute. Show a link, a source card or a spoken "according to" credit, depending on the surface.

Google's documentation is explicit that its AI features use the same index and eligibility rules as Search, and that snippet controls such as nosnippet and max-snippet also limit how content is used in AI features (Google Search Central).

What answer engine optimization includes

Question research

Collect the questions buyers actually ask: People Also Ask, sales and support logs, community threads, and the prompts people type into assistants about your category.

Answer-first page structure

Put a direct, self-contained answer in the first sentence or two under a heading that matches the question, then add detail, examples and a table where comparison helps.

Structured data

Organization, Product, Service, Article and FAQPage markup that matches the visible page, so engines can read facts and question-answer pairs without guessing.

Technical eligibility

Indexation in Google and Bing, crawler access for AI search bots, content available without JavaScript, and snippet settings that do not accidentally exclude you from answers.

Entity consistency

The same name, description, products and facts on your site, your profiles and directories, so engines are confident which company an answer is about.

Corroboration and measurement

Earn accurate mentions where your category's answers come from, then track a fixed question set per engine over time. See AI citation tracking.

AEO checklist for a single page

  • The H1 or an H2 states the question in the words buyers use.
  • The first one or two sentences answer it completely, without "it depends" or a long preamble.
  • Each paragraph still makes sense if it is quoted on its own: no "as mentioned above", no unclear "it" or "this".
  • Comparisons are in a table; steps are in a numbered list.
  • Claims are specific and sourced, with dates where facts change.
  • The page is indexed, canonical to itself, and readable in the raw HTML.
  • Structured data matches the visible text, and the author or organization is clearly identified.

Choosing an answer engine optimization agency

Useful questions to ask any AEO or GEO agency before you sign:

  • How do you measure? Expect a fixed prompt or question set, named engines and a reporting window, not a single proprietary score.
  • What do you change on the site? Look for technical, structured data and content work, not only reporting.
  • How do you handle off-site mentions? Answers lean on third-party sources; avoid anyone selling fake reviews or paid link schemes.
  • Do you guarantee placement? The honest answer is no. Nobody controls what an answer engine writes.
  • How does this fit our SEO? AEO should strengthen the site your SEO depends on, not add a parallel set of thin pages.

Answer engine optimization FAQ

What is answer engine optimization?

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring content and brand information so answer engines, including Google AI Overviews and featured snippets, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot and voice assistants, can take a direct answer from it and attribute that answer to you.

What is the difference between AEO and SEO?

SEO aims to rank a page so people click through to it. AEO aims to have your content used as the answer itself, in a featured snippet, an AI Overview, a chatbot reply or a voice response, with your brand credited. AEO depends on SEO: answer engines mostly draw on pages that are already crawled and indexed.

What is the difference between AEO and GEO?

They overlap heavily. AEO grew out of featured snippets and voice search and emphasizes direct, question-shaped answers. Generative engine optimization (GEO) emphasizes being retrieved and cited inside answers that AI models synthesize from several sources. Most of the day-to-day work is the same.

Is AEO replacing SEO?

No. Google states that normal SEO best practices apply to its AI features, and AI assistants retrieve from search indexes. AEO changes what you optimize for and how you measure it, not whether you need a technically sound site.

Does FAQ schema still help with AEO?

Google limited FAQ rich results to a small set of authoritative government and health sites in 2023, so most sites no longer get the visual result. FAQPage markup can still describe question-and-answer structure to machines, provided it matches questions and answers visible on the page.

How do you measure answer engine optimization?

Track a fixed set of real customer questions in named answer engines over time and record whether your brand is mentioned and your pages are cited. Pair that with Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools and referral traffic from AI assistants.

What does an AEO agency do?

An AEO agency researches the questions your buyers ask, restructures key pages so they answer those questions directly, fixes technical and structured data issues that block answer engines, builds third-party corroboration and reports on mentions and citations across engines.
