Only 5% of its citations ranked in Google's top 10. See what it cites instead. If you want this done, call or email.\norganization: Neural Command LLC\ncanonical: https://nrlc.ai/en-us/insights/how-to-get-your-business-mentioned-in-chatgpt/\n---\n\n← Back to insights\n\nBy\n\n[Joel David Maldonado](https://nrlc.ai/en-us/about/joel-maldonado/), NRLC.ai\n\nUpdated\n\nOctober 23, 2026\n\nJoel leads SEO and AI search at a global domain registrar: 1.2M Google AI-feature impressions and 198K Microsoft Copilot citations in six months.\n\n## The short answer\n\nTo get cited by ChatGPT, let OAI-SearchBot crawl your site, then get onto the pages ChatGPT already cites for your buyers' questions: \"best of\" lists, directories, review platforms and up-to-date comparison pages. Ranking on Google is not a reliable proxy. In our test of 100 live ChatGPT answers, only 5% of inline citations were pages in Google's top 10 for the same question.\n\n## Key findings\n\n- 5.3% of inline citations (35 of 665) were pages ranking in Google's top 10 for the same question.\n- 72 of 100 answers had no inline citation from Google's top 10.\n- 24 of 25 local answers cited a third-party list, directory or review site; 5 of 25 cited a business's own website.\n- 48% of inline citations for how-to and cost questions were government sites (66 of 138).\n- 406 different domains were cited inline; no single domain appeared in more than 6 of 100 answers.\nFull data: download the CSV (2,154 cited URLs across 100 answers). The method is below.\n\n## Ranking on Google does not get you cited\n\nFor each question we pulled Google's US top 10 for the exact same wording and checked whether ChatGPT cited any of those pages. Only 35 of 665 inline citations (5.3%) were top-10 pages. Matching on the domain instead of the exact page raises that to 15%. In 49 of 100 answers, not one page from Google's top 10 appeared anywhere in ChatGPT's source list.\n\nOpenAI says ChatGPT search uses its own crawler, OAI-SearchBot, and third-party search providers, so a different set of pages is not surprising. The practical point: a good Google ranking is not evidence that ChatGPT will cite you. You have to check ChatGPT directly.\n\nInline citations by type of question\n\nQuestion type\n\nInline citations\n\nPage in Google top 10\n\nDomain in Google top 10\n\nMost-cited kinds of site\n\nLocal services (25)\n\n126\n\n3.2%\n\n15.9%\n\nYelp, Expertise.com, Birdeye, ConsumerAffairs, city \"best of\" sites\n\nBusiness software and services (25)\n\n247\n\n2.8%\n\n10.9%\n\nSoftware comparison sites, vendor blogs, Zapier, TechRadar\n\nConsumer products (25)\n\n154\n\n10.4%\n\n23.4%\n\nRTINGS, Tom's Guide, TechRadar, Wired, Good Housekeeping\n\nHow-to and cost questions (25)\n\n138\n\n5.8%\n\n12.3%\n\nIRS, FTC, CFPB, EPA, SBA and other .gov sites\n\n## Local businesses: ChatGPT cites the lists, not the business\n\nWe asked 25 local questions such as \"best dentist in Austin TX for dental implants\" and \"best pest control company in Houston\". In 24 of the 25 answers, ChatGPT cited at least one third-party list, directory or review page. Examples were Yelp, Expertise.com, Birdeye, ConsumerAffairs, Houzz and city sites like \"Portland Top Rated\" or \"My Best Orlando\". It cited a business's own website in only 5 of 25 answers.\n\nYelp was the most-cited domain in local answers (6 answers). Its citations were individual business pages (yelp.com/biz/…) with an OpenAI tracking tag, so when ChatGPT named a business, its Yelp listing often stood in for its own website. Several cited \"best of\" sites had little or no backlink authority. For a local business, the work is getting listed and described accurately on the pages ChatGPT reads for your city and service, starting with your Yelp listing. Publishing more pages on your own site is not the main lever.\n\n## Small sites get cited too\n\nWe measured backlink authority (0 to 100) for a random sample of 60 domains that ChatGPT cited but Google did not rank. We did the same for 60 domains Google ranked but ChatGPT did not cite.\n\n- Cited by ChatGPT only: median 42.5. 19 of 60 scored 20 or less, and 10 had no measurable authority.\n- Ranked by Google only: median 49. 8 of 60 scored 20 or less, and none were at zero.\nAuthority still helps, but it is not a gate. Pages that answer the question directly, such as a dated \"best X in city\" list or a specific comparison, were cited even from very small sites.\n\n## What the cited pages have in common\n\n- They answer the comparison directly. 37% of inline-cited URLs (248 of 665) were \"best\", \"top\", \"vs\", \"review\", \"compare\" or \"alternatives\" pages.\n- They are visibly current. 26% of inline citations (176 of 665) had \"2026\" in the title or URL.\n- For how-to and cost questions, they are official. Government sites made up 66 of 138 inline citations in that group. A business page gets in by adding what official pages lack, such as real prices, timelines and local specifics.\n- They come from a long tail. ChatGPT cited 406 different domains inline. The most-cited domains, Yelp and NerdWallet, each appeared in only 6 of 100 answers.\n## How this compares with earlier studies\n\nThis is a small replication, and most of its headline results agree with larger studies:\n\n- Google overlap. Ahrefs found that 6.82% of ChatGPT citations for fan-out queries, and 10% for short head terms, were Google top-10 pages. Our 5.3% is in the same range (Ahrefs, 2025).\n- App vs API. A 2026 preprint found that Google results and OpenAI's API together recovered only about a quarter of the pages the ChatGPT web app cited (Search Engine Journal). That matters for anyone tracking ChatGPT through the API.\n- Where we differ: Yelp. BrightLocal's 2024 study found no Yelp sources in local ChatGPT results (BrightLocal). Omnipresence's June 2026 study, run through the API, counted Yelp, Angi, Thumbtack, HomeAdvisor and Avvo together at 8 of 1,982 citations (Omnipresence). In the consumer app in October 2026, Yelp business pages appeared in 6 of our 25 local answers. One plausible reason is that the app shows local business results the API does not; our single run per question cannot confirm it.\n## How to get cited by ChatGPT: what to do\n\n- Let OAI-SearchBot in. OpenAI states that sites opted out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, and that robots.txt changes take about 24 hours to apply. Blocking GPTBot (training) does not affect this.\n- Run your buyers' questions in ChatGPT and record the sources. Use 20 to 50 real questions, such as \"best [service] in [city]\" and \"[your product] vs [competitor]\". The cited pages are your target list, and in our data they were mostly not the pages ranking on Google.\n- Get onto those pages. Claim and complete directory and review profiles, ask list publishers to evaluate you, and correct wrong details. For local businesses this was the source of 24 of 25 answers.\n- Publish the page ChatGPT is looking for. Write a dated comparison or \"how to choose\" page with concrete criteria, prices and specifics, and put the answer first.\n- Measure by repeating the same prompts. Answers vary between runs, so track whether you are cited across repeated checks, not one screenshot. See how to track AI citations.\n## Three claims this data does not support\n\n- \"ChatGPT doesn't visit websites, it only remembers training data.\" Every one of our 100 answers used web search and cited live pages.\n- \"Rank on Google and you'll be cited.\" Only 5.3% of inline citations were Google top-10 pages for the same question.\n- \"You need a big, high-authority site.\" A third of the sampled cited-only domains scored 20 or less for authority.\n## Method and limitations\n\n- Prompts. We wrote 100 English questions in four groups of 25: local services, business software and services, consumer products, and how-to and cost questions. Each was asked once.\n- ChatGPT. Each question was run on 23 October 2026 through live, logged-out ChatGPT from the United States, using a ChatGPT monitoring service (cloro). We recorded the inline citations shown in the answer and the full source list. Duplicate URLs within an answer were counted once. A few inline items were map links or logo images; they are left in the data as returned.\n- Google. We pulled Google's US top 10 organic results for the exact question text on the same day. The service did not return ChatGPT's own behind-the-scenes search queries, so we compared against the question as asked. Local questions were searched at US level with the city in the wording, not from the city itself.\n- Bing. We tried to collect Bing results too, but two separate data providers returned results unrelated to the queries. We left Bing out instead of publishing bad data.\n- Authority. Backlink authority is DataForSEO's 0–100 rank, measured for a random sample (seed 42) of 60 domains in each group.\n- Limits. One run per question, one country, one day. ChatGPT answers vary between runs and users, so treat these as a snapshot, not a ranking factor study.\nData: chatgpt-citation-study-2026-10.csv, free to reuse with credit to NRLC.ai (CC BY 4.0).\n\n## What comes next: a randomized trial\n\nThis study, like the others above, only shows what ChatGPT cites. To test whether optimization actually changes it, we are running a randomized, pre-registered trial with software and ecommerce brands.\n\n## Get your own citation check\n\nWe run this same test on your buyers' questions: which pages ChatGPT cites, where you are missing and which lists to get onto. See generative engine optimization services or book a consultation.\n\n## FAQ\n\nHow do I get my business cited by ChatGPT?\n\nAllow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt, then find the pages ChatGPT already cites when your buyers ask about your category and get your business onto them: \"best of\" lists, directories, review platforms and comparison articles. Publish your own page that answers the comparison question directly, with current prices, criteria and dates.\n\nIf I rank number one on Google, will ChatGPT cite me?\n\nNot reliably. In our test of 100 live answers, only 35 of 665 inline citations (5.3%) were pages in Google's top 10 for the same question, and 72 of 100 answers cited nothing from that top 10 inline.\n\nDoes ChatGPT read my website?\n\nYes. OpenAI says OAI-SearchBot crawls sites for ChatGPT search, and sites that opt out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers. ChatGPT-User visits pages when a user's question needs them. GPTBot is separate and only concerns model training.\n\nCan small websites get cited by ChatGPT?\n\nYes. Of 60 sampled domains that ChatGPT cited but Google did not rank in the top 10, 19 had a backlink authority of 20 or less out of 100, and 10 had no measurable authority at all. Among 60 domains Google ranked but ChatGPT did not cite, 8 were at 20 or less and none were at zero.\n\nCan I pay to be cited in ChatGPT?\n\nNo citation placement is sold. ChatGPT does show ads, which OpenAI checks with a separate crawler, OAI-AdsBot, but ads are a separate placement from the sources an answer cites.\n\nHow long does it take for changes to show up in ChatGPT?\n\nOpenAI says robots.txt changes for search take about 24 hours to apply. Being added to lists and directories, and those pages being recrawled, takes longer and varies. Re-run the same prompts every few weeks to see whether you are cited.\n\nReferences\n\n## Sources\n\n- Overview of OpenAI Crawlers — OpenAI\n- Introducing ChatGPT Search — OpenAI\n\n\n---\n\nSource: https://nrlc.ai/en-us/insights/how-to-get-your-business-mentioned-in-chatgpt/\nPublisher: Neural Command LLC\nLicense: Editorial use with attribution\n"
