How GEO works, GEO vs SEO, and FAQs.\norganization: Neural Command LLC\ncanonical: https://nrlc.ai/en-us/generative-engine-optimization/\n---\n\nBy\n\n[Joel David Maldonado](https://nrlc.ai/en-us/about/joel-maldonado/), NRLC.ai\n\nUpdated\n\nOctober 19, 2026\n\nJoel leads SEO and AI search at a global domain registrar: 1.2M Google AI-feature impressions and 198K Microsoft Copilot citations in six months.\n\n## What is generative engine optimization?\n\nGenerative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of making a brand's content and information easy for AI systems such as ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot to find, trust and cite when they generate an answer.\n\nClassic SEO competes for a position in a list of links. GEO competes for a place inside the answer itself: being named as a recommended option, being quoted, or being listed as a source. When a buyer asks an assistant \"which agency should we hire for X\" or \"what is the best tool for Y\", the assistant writes a short answer from a handful of sources. GEO is the work of becoming one of those sources and being described accurately.\n\nThe term comes from a 2023 research paper by Aggarwal and colleagues (GEO: Generative Engine Optimization), which tested how content changes affect whether a source shows up in generative engine responses. It found that adding citations, quotations from relevant sources and statistics improved source visibility, while keyword stuffing did not.\n\nYou will also see GEO called GEO SEO, AI search optimization, AI SEO or LLM optimization (LLMO). Answer engine optimization (AEO) is a closely related label that grew out of featured snippets and voice search.\n\n## How GEO works: how an AI answer is assembled\n\nMost AI search features do not answer from memory alone. They run searches, read a small set of pages, and write a summary with links. Every step is a place where your content can be picked up or dropped.\n\n- Interpret and expand the question. The system rewrites the prompt into several searches. Google describes this \"query fan-out\" for AI Overviews and AI Mode, so one question can trigger related sub-queries you never targeted directly.\n- Retrieve candidates from an index. Google's AI features draw on Google's index, Microsoft Copilot grounds web answers in Bing, and ChatGPT search fetches results with its own crawler and search partners. A page that is blocked, not indexed or hidden behind client-side JavaScript is usually not in the candidate set.\n- Pick passages, not pages. The system extracts short segments that answer a sub-question. A clear, self-contained paragraph or table row is easier to lift than an answer spread across a long introduction.\n- Check agreement. Claims that several independent sources agree on are safer to repeat. A brand described the same way on its own site, in directories, reviews, forums and the press is easier to name with confidence.\n- Write and attribute. The answer is generated and some sources are cited or linked. Being retrieved does not guarantee a visible citation, so measurement looks at both mentions and citations.\nGoogle states that there are no special requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode beyond being indexed and eligible to show a snippet, and that normal SEO best practices apply (Google Search Central: AI features and your website). That is why GEO starts with SEO foundations rather than replacing them.\n\n## GEO vs SEO at a glance\n\nGEO and SEO share the same foundation but aim at different outcomes. The short version:\n\nGenerative engine optimization compared with search engine optimization\n\n \n\nSEO\n\nGEO\n\nGoal\n\nRank a page in the list of results\n\nBe named, quoted or cited inside an AI answer\n\nWhere it shows\n\nGoogle and Bing results pages\n\nChatGPT, AI Overviews, AI Mode, Copilot, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude\n\nUnit of competition\n\nThe page\n\nThe passage and the entity (your brand, product, person)\n\nOff-site signal\n\nBacklinks\n\nConsistent mentions and corroboration across trusted sources\n\nMain metric\n\nRankings, clicks, organic traffic\n\nMention rate, citation rate, share of voice in answers\n\nShared foundation\n\nCrawlable, indexable, fast, accurate pages about a clearly defined entity\n\nRead the full GEO vs SEO comparison and how to run both from one roadmap →\n\n## What generative engine optimization involves\n\n### 1. Technical eligibility\n\nLet the crawlers that feed AI answers reach your important pages: Googlebot, Bingbot, OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot among them. Serve key content in the initial HTML, keep canonicals clean, and confirm pages are indexed in both Google and Bing.\n\n### 2. Entity clarity\n\nDescribe the company, its products, people and locations the same way everywhere. Connect profiles with Organization and Person structured data and sameAs links so systems resolve your brand to one thing, not several.\n\n### 3. Citable content\n\nPut the answer first. Use plain definitions, comparison tables, specific numbers you can stand behind, and one idea per paragraph so a passage still makes sense when it is lifted out of the page.\n\n### 4. Structured data that matches the page\n\nJSON-LD for organizations, services, products, articles and FAQs helps machines read facts, but only when it says the same thing as the visible text. Conflicting markup is a common reason facts get dropped.\n\n### 5. Third-party corroboration\n\nAI answers lean on sources other than your own site. In an October 2026 check of the sources ChatGPT cites most for \"generative engine optimization\", the list was led by Reddit, Wikipedia, arXiv, Google's developer documentation and search-industry publications. Earning accurate mentions in the places your category's answers come from is part of the work.\n\n### 6. Measurement\n\nTrack a fixed set of buyer prompts in named engines over time: is the brand mentioned, is a page cited, who is named instead? Our measurement method explains citation rate and its limits.\n\n## GEO SEO: is generative engine optimization part of SEO?\n\nIn practice, yes. \"GEO SEO\" is how many teams describe adding generative engine optimization to an existing SEO program: the same site, the same technical hygiene, plus new goals (mentions and citations), new content formats (answer-first passages, tables, definitions) and new reporting (prompt tracking across AI systems).\n\nTwo cautions. First, \"geo SEO\" is also used for geo-targeted or local SEO, which is about physical location and map results, not generative engines. Check which one a vendor means. Second, treating GEO as a separate silo from SEO usually backfires: content written only for AI extraction, or pages generated at scale to \"cover prompts\", tend to weaken the site that AI systems retrieve from.\n\n## What GEO is not\n\n- Not a guaranteed placement. No vendor controls what ChatGPT, Gemini or Copilot says. Answers vary between runs, users and days, which is why GEO is measured with samples over time.\n- Not keyword stuffing for AI. The original GEO research found keyword stuffing among the weakest tactics. Clear, specific, well-sourced writing performs better.\n- Not a single file or tag. A proposed file such as llms.txt is cheap to publish, but Google, OpenAI and Microsoft have not documented it as a citation signal. It does not replace indexable, well-structured pages.\n- Not mass-produced pages. Hundreds of near-identical \"AI-optimized\" pages create duplicate, low-trust signals. See GEO failure modes.\n## How to start with generative engine optimization\n\n- Write down 20 to 50 buyer prompts. Use the questions sales and support hear, plus category comparisons (\"best X for Y\", \"X vs Y\", \"is X worth it\").\n- Get a baseline. Run them in ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews or AI Mode, Copilot and Perplexity. Note who is named, which pages are cited and what is wrong about your brand.\n- Fix eligibility. Check robots rules, indexation in Google and Bing, rendering without JavaScript, and canonical conflicts on the pages that should be cited.\n- Rewrite the pages that matter. Lead with a one-sentence answer, add a comparison table or a specific example, and remove filler that separates the question from the answer.\n- Close entity and corroboration gaps. Align your descriptions across your site, profiles and directories; pursue mentions in the publications and communities your category's answers already cite.\n- Re-run the prompts on a schedule and report changes per engine, not as one blended score.\n## Want help with GEO?\n\nNRLC.ai is led by Joel David Maldonado, who leads SEO and AI search at a global domain registrar: 1.2M Google AI-feature impressions and 198K Microsoft Copilot citations in six months. Where SEO aims for a ranked link, GEO aims for a mention or a cited source inside the AI-generated answer.\n\nWhat does GEO SEO mean?\n\nGEO SEO usually means generative engine optimization practiced as an extension of SEO: the same crawlable, indexable site, plus work aimed at being cited in AI answers. It is sometimes confused with geo-targeted or local SEO, which is about geographic location, not generative engines.\n\nIs GEO replacing SEO?\n\nNo. AI search features retrieve from search indexes, so a page that cannot be crawled, indexed and understood is rarely cited. GEO adds goals and measurements on top of SEO; it does not remove the need for it.\n\nIs GEO the same as AEO or LLM optimization?\n\nThey overlap heavily. Answer engine optimization (AEO) grew out of featured snippets and voice answers and focuses on direct answers. LLM optimization (LLMO) and AI SEO are broader labels for the same goal. GEO is the term used in the 2023 research paper that named the field and focuses on visibility inside synthesized generative answers.\n\nHow do you measure generative engine optimization?\n\nRun a fixed list of buyer prompts in named AI systems on a schedule and record whether your brand is mentioned, whether your pages are cited, and which competitors appear. Report citation rate for each engine and time window, alongside Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools and AI referral traffic.\n\nDoes schema markup help GEO?\n\nStructured data helps machines identify entities and facts, but it does not guarantee a citation. It works best when the JSON-LD matches what the visible page says and the same facts are corroborated on other sites.\n\nHow long does GEO take to show results?\n\nIt depends on how often the AI systems refresh their retrieval and how much corroboration already exists for the brand. Technical fixes can affect retrieval quickly; entity recognition and third-party mentions build more slowly. Anyone promising a fixed timeline or a guaranteed citation is guessing.\n\n## GEO research library\n\n### Decision Traces in Generative Search\n\nHow AI systems learn what to trust through observable retrieval judgments.\n\n[Read research →](https://nrlc.ai/en-us/generative-engine-optimization/decision-traces/)### GEO Failure Modes\n\nObservable patterns when content disappears from AI-generated answers.\n\n[Read research →](https://nrlc.ai/en-us/generative-engine-optimization/failure-modes/)References\n\n## Sources\n\n- GEO: Generative Engine Optimization — arXiv / ACM KDD 2024\n- AI Features and Your Website — Google Search Central\n- Introducing ChatGPT Search — OpenAI\n- Structured Data and Rich Results — Google Search Central\n- GPTBot Web Crawler Documentation — OpenAI\n- Perplexity Crawler Documentation — Perplexity\n\n\n---\n\nSource: https://nrlc.ai/en-us/generative-engine-optimization/\nPublisher: Neural Command LLC\nLicense: Editorial use with attribution\n"
