AI SEO, also called SEO for AI, is the work of making a website and a company understandable to AI search.

Search used to send a person to a page. AI search can answer in place. The answer may name your company, link to your site, mention a competitor, or leave you out. A click is no longer the only sign that the system used you as a source.

AI SEO tries to make the right description of a company available when an AI system answers. That means the public facts are clear, the important pages can be read, and the system can tell your company apart from a similarly named one.

It does not train the model. It does not replace ordinary SEO. Rankings and traffic still matter for the classic results page. AI SEO is the additional question of whether the answer itself can find and name you.

Four things usually decide it:

- Whether a crawler can reach the page, including content that only appears after JavaScript runs.
- Whether the page states who you are, what you offer, and which facts matter.
- Whether the structured data on the page agrees with the words a person can read.
- Whether those facts stay consistent from one page to the next.
Later, the technical names for that work are retrieval, citations, entities, structured data, and machine-readable information. You do not need those names to see the problem. When a site is large enough that the markup has to stay accurate over time, governance is the name for that upkeep. Answer-engine and generative-engine labels are other names people use for parts of the same problem. This page does not require them.

Read this page to understand the category. Use AI Search Optimization when you want NRLC to evaluate the site and change it: access, the way the business is described, conflicts between the visible page and the structured data, and the pages that should be citeable.

Measuring AI citations is a separate method. It uses a fixed list of prompts, a named AI system, and a time window. A mention of the brand is not the same thing as a citation of the URL. Search Console clicks are not that measurement. NRLC has not published a worked example, because there is not yet an observation log that would support one.
